Homework, or “Extended Learning”, is an important part of a child’s further development, and can take many forms. At St Clare’s we believe ‘homework’ should extend a child’s wider development and link learning to everyday skills.

Every child is different and so are home circumstances. St Clare’s School recognise this, so are providing homework ideas that can be carried out at set times, or as opportunities arise, depending on how parents would like to organise this with their child. These homeworks are designed to give ideas and extend your child’s development, to enable them to connect their learning, and develop their wider functional skills. The list is not exhaustive, and you may find that you are already undertaking some of these activities:


To support the development of their Speaking and Listening:

  • Talk with your child about specific topics. Listen to what they have done and are planning to do.
  • Watch the news/ CBBC News with them and discuss what they have seen and heard. Get them to discuss/ predict what might happen. Ask them to detect any bias or techniques, such as informing or persuasion.
  • Encourage them to ring up and talk to friends / relatives on the phone.

To support the development of their Reading:

  • Try to read regularly with your child. Ask them to talk about the plot and characters of the book they are reading. Ask them to tell you what has happened and what might happen next.
  • Visit a library.
  • Get them to read the news, articles etc. that can be found on the web.

To support the development of their writing:

  • Encourage them to write birthday cards and Christmas cards to family and friends and send them through the post.
  • Encourage them to send thank you letters or phone to thank people/ relatives.
  • Encourage them to learn and write their weekly spellings
  • Encourage writing for enjoyment and not just for a task.


It is important to support your child in understanding how their Maths transfers to everyday world. Below are some ideas to support the functional maths they are learning and developing in school that can be completed:

  • Make cakes or cook dinner with your child. Get them to think about measuring and the time something may take to cook.
  • Travel on the bus or train and look at timetables. When will the transport arrive? How long will the journey take? When will we arrive?
  • Play a board game (monopoly, connect four, ludo or other games that involves counters and counting squares)
  • Count door number – think about odds and evens. Are there any numbers missing? Are the numbers going up or down?
  • Make repeating patterns from beads or other items
  • Encourage the use of money. What coins are needed to pay for something? How much are these items? How much change should I get?

Mymaths – Each child has been issued with their own personal login to the www.mymaths.co.uk website. This is a useful site for consolidating learning that has taken place in the classroom.

To support the development of Moneysense a useful website is www.natwest.mymoneysense.com/home. They will need to click on “students” at the top of the screen that opens up.

To support your childs revision for their GCSE exam they can be encouraged to look at:

Year 10     

To support your childs wider knowledge of Science and support their ersonal investigation skills they should be encouraged to watch CBBC newsround http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround and discuss what science is in the news?

Year 9 – Creepy Crawlies
When out and about, name the different animals that they see. Encourage them to discuss its habitat (where they live), what does the animal eat and what might eat it?

Year 7 & 8
Fibres and Fabrics – Look at different materials and discuss: What are they made from? How can we group materials? Is it synthetic (man made) or natural (found in the earth)? Find things around the house made of…?
Electricity – Look at and discuss different household appliances that use electricity?  What is their use? Also think about sharing information from an electricity bill and how it is calculated: Cost per unit, units used etc. Compare to previous bill and discuss why it might be higher or lower than the previous bill. What can be done to reduce the bill?

Make an aerodynamic paper airplane and discuss what helps or stops the plane from flying further.

Find out and investigate a scientist and what they are famous for.
